2025-2026

The Health and Physical Education Department is always busy!

With multiple sections of their many classes, students are enjoying all of our athletic spaces: the Tiger Den, the weight room, the Career Center Gym, the Cube, the pool, our outdoor areas, and all of the amazing space in the TRAC! There are so many opportunities here where you can learn while achieving your fitness goals!

Text on a black background reads 'FRESHMAN P.E.'

With new graduation requirements in place, which lowered the number of required semesters of PE from two to one, our numbers have dropped in Freshman P.E. However, the activity levels and improvements have not fallen off!

Our students are introduced to a variety of fitness training and sporting/game units that expose them to activities we expand upon in our Elective classes. While the Indiana State Graduation Requirement is only one credit, we strongly encourage all students to take as many Elective Physical Education classes as possible in the remainder of their high school career to establish positive habits and fitness levels to prepare them for post-high school life.

Students are challenged with our daily “Le Tigre” Program (see below), skill development, and fitness routines. In the midst of improving cardiovascular health, muscular endurance, and mobility, we are also seeing students learn team strategies, cooperation, and sportsmanship.

Text on a black background reads 'ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT'.

This elective is for athletes who desire to improve their sport performance through the proper and supervised development of STRENGTH, POWER, SPEED, and AGILITY. The programming designed by our certified strength and conditioning specialist is proven to increase all facets of athleticism. If you are a serious athlete looking to invest in your athletic pursuits, this class is a must-have every semester. This course may be taken multiple times.

We have set a new student enrollment record in the 2025-2026 school year. We are averaging over 56 students per class.

Under the guidance of Strength and Conditioning Coach Andrew Childress, new students are learning the foundations of proper strength training and speed, while returning and experienced athletes are continuing to build upon their efforts from prior semesters to further increase their fitness, ability, and resilience to injuries.

We will have our first testing rounds near to the end of Q1 to give students feedback about their progress.

A black rectangle with the text 'LIFETIME RECREATION AND SPORTS' in a stylized font.

This elective is for students who enjoy competing in sports and are ready for the next level of SKILL DEVELOPMENT and STRATEGY. Class competition, sportsmanship, advanced strategies and student creativity are all part of making this class unique and popular. This course may be taken multiple times.

We have made a substantial change of curriculum by alternating two activities each day for two weeks before switching to two new activities. Our goals were to increase interest and participation while eliminating boredom and unsportsmanlike behavior.

Each week wraps up with each group or team nominating an outstanding player of the day AND the best teammate/best sportsmanship player of the day. To date, nearly every students has been nominated for one or both categories.

A black rectangle with the text 'LIFEGUARDING/WSI' in a stylized font.

Lifeguarding is for students interested in learning the lifesaving skills developed by the American Red Cross that will earn them their Lifeguarding and First Aid/CPR/AED cards. This class will help those who finish win a Lifeguarding job!

Our Water Safety Instructor class is for dedicated students interested in learning how to teach swim lessons as directed by the American Red Cross. Next stop: Swim Instructor!

Each of these classes are one semester and may only be taken once.

Coach Lalonde continues to produce highly qualified Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors for the community. This is a challenge she has undertaken for over three decades and she takes this responsibility very seriously while making it fun and enjoyable for the students.

VR training headsets are the newest technology being offered in these classes. This technology allows a student to choose from options of supervising different pools and other bodies of water with varying situations potentially happening around. Immediate feedback is given about how the students scan their environment and react to situations.

Text on a black background reads 'HEALTH AND WELLNESS'.

A required class for graduation, this class provides a foundation of education on student health and well-being. Health and Wellness covers a wide variety of comprehensive topics to assist students in navigating the complex topic of personal and community health. Along with thorough and well-planned lessons, students will experience ample hands-on activities and guest speakers to bring lessons to life.

The words 'WEIGHT TRAINING' are displayed in a rectangular black box.

This class is for WCHS’s non-athlete students interested in developing a strength training program while learning how to lift safely and properly. STRENGTH and MUSCULAR ENDURANCE are the two main components of the class as it progresses from teacher-led programming to student-led programming (once essential standards are met). This course may be taken multiple times.
