Intermediate Orchestra follows the Indiana Academic Standards for High School Instrumental Music and focuses on developing and strengthening string technique. This class is available for students from all grade levels!
These musicians will explore the topics of tone production, intonation, sight reading, listening skills, expression, balance, and blend. Using a variety of music, students will practice analysis, explore historically significant styles, and determine how to perform the music as the composer intended.
As a co-curricular class, students are required to participate in events outside of the school day-such as afternoon rehearsals and evening performances. The public performances expand upon the learning experiences in the classroom, and serve as a culmination of the musical goals pursued during daily rehearsals.
Prerequisites: Previous orchestra experience; permission of the Director.
Credits: 2 semester course, 1 credit per semester.
The nature of this course allows for successive semesters of instruction at an advanced level provided that defined proficiencies and content standards are utilized.

Advanced Philharmonic Orchestra follows the Indiana Academic Standards for High School Instrumental Music and focuses on refining advanced string technique. This class is open to grades 10, 11, and 12 through an audition process, previous orchestra experiences, and director permission.
Musicians work to develop a high level of mastery in tone production, intonation, sight reading, listening skills, expression, balance, and blend. Just like in the Intermediate Orchestra class, students will analyze music, dive deeper into historically significant styles, and endeavor to perform music as the composer intended while also making informed decisions as an experienced musician.
As a co-curricular class, students are required to participate in events outside of the school day - such as afternoon rehearsals and evening performances. Honors Advanced Orchestra takes place within the Philharmonic Orchestra class and covers nearly the same material as the Advanced Orchestral musicians and is open to grades 10, 11, and 12. However, honors students are required to participate in at least one independent-study project to broaden and increase individual musicianship skills.
Project options include: performing at Solo and Ensemble, auditioning for All-State Orchestra, attending and analyzing professional-level concerts, or taking private lessons. Please note: many Honors projects require a fee to participate.
Prerequisites: Audition, two prior full years of orchestra, and permission of the Director.
Credits: 2 semester course, 1 credit per semester.

WCHS believes the arts play a vital role in a well-rounded education, helping students build confidence, think critically, and connect with the world around them.
All Fine Arts classes fulfill the requirement for the Core 40 with Academic Honors Diploma and count as directed electives or simple electives for all diplomas.
Students wishing to accomplish the Civic Arts Pathway must earn a C- or higher in all related Arts courses. They must ALSO take the Intro to Business in the Arts (APEX/Edmentum) Course and finish by completing the Portfolio or Community Connection Project.
