This week, eighth-grade students participated in Discover Manufacturing Experiences (DiscoverME), a career awareness program through OrthoWorx that showcases modern manufacturing across Kosciusko County. Lakeview Middle School students engaged in a variety of hands-on activities with local companies.

Students were introduced to career paths and skill sets that lead to successful careers in the manufacturing industry. All students had the opportunity to learn about different educational pathways to local careers and courses available at their high school’s career center.

The 8th-grade students had the amazing opportunity today to learn about the opportunities available to them as they begin to think about their transition to high school and higher education. Groups toured the WACC programs at Lakeview including machining and welding. They practiced a virtual weld and were able to work on a wood lathe. They also toured the floors of many local manufacturing facilities. While there, students witnessed the way a piece moves from raw materials to a product available for consumers. We visited the local Ivy Tech program to understand the options available there as well. Throughout the day students were able to see adults in a variety of jobs with various levels of education and experience. It’s an excellent tactile experience for these students as they begin thinking about their futures.

By partnering with local manufacturing companies in Kosciusko County, OrthoWorx showcases modern manufacturing— an innovative, technology-driven industry that offers secure, well-paying jobs and excellent benefits with the opportunity for further education and

advancement.
